Choose a window covering by what the room needs at different times of day. Privacy, softened daylight, a darker bedroom and reduced screen glare are different goals and may require different specifications.
Before requesting a quote
- Room purpose and times when light or privacy matters.
- Window photographs, recess depth and handle positions.
- Preferred view, light filtering and darkness requirements.
- Household access needs and compatible operating options.
Give each room a simple brief
Write down when direct light becomes uncomfortable, when neighbours can see into the room and whether you want an outward view while the covering is in use. A bedroom and a home office may need different answers even on the same façade. Begin with the use of the room, then compare the available materials, styles and finishes with the supplier.
Check the recess, handles and adjacent furniture
Provide a photo of the full window and an angled view showing recess depth. Include handles, trim and any door that swings nearby. Inside and outside mounting can produce different edge conditions, and furniture can limit access to controls. Measurements should correspond to the selected mounting method; copying the dimensions of an old covering can carry an old fit problem into the new order.
Discuss the finished light result
A material's description is only one part of the result. Light can also enter around the edges of an installation. If a darker room is the priority, discuss mounting and gaps along with the material. If daytime privacy matters, ask how the covering is intended to be used under the room's changing light conditions. Request confirmation for the product being considered.
Choose operation for the household
Explain which windows are hard to reach and whether several coverings need coordinated use. Include children, pets and furniture placement in the discussion. For powered or connected options, confirm compatible equipment and setup responsibilities. Exterior security shutters remain a separate category: an interior blind should not be expected to protect the glass against forced entry.
Apply the checklist to your project
For a Toronto or GTA project, send the city, property type, opening photos and approximate dimensions. Explain the main result you want and any existing systems or site constraints.
