How an exterior roller shutter fits the opening
The curtain travels in side guides and stores above the opening when raised. The box and guides need suitable mounting space, so glass dimensions alone are not enough to choose a system. A full exterior photo should show the surrounding wall, window trim, sill, soffit and any nearby obstructions. The proposed layout should also preserve access for future servicing.
Retrofit or built-in installation?
For an existing home or storefront, a surface-mounted box can be considered without assuming the wall can accommodate a concealed system. A new build or substantial renovation gives more opportunity to coordinate a built-in box before finishes are complete. The project stage, structure and available space should determine the mounting choice.
Choosing everyday operation
Manual operation may suit a compatible smaller opening. Motorization is worth considering for wider, frequently used or hard-to-reach shutters. Discuss power, controls and any required backup operation before ordering. For shade and privacy, consider how the room will be used when the shutter is closed; a closed exterior curtain changes the view as well as the light.
